The Wilks 2020 formula

Wilks 2020 normalises a powerlifting total against bodyweight using a 5th-order polynomial fit on modern competition data. The output is a dimensionless score where higher is better.

Wilks 2020
score = 600 · total / P(bw)
P(bw)
a + b·bw + c·bw² + d·bw³ + e·bw⁴ + f·bw⁵

Frequently asked questions

How is the 2020 Wilks different from the original?

The 2020 revision (Vanderburgh & Batterham) rebalances the coefficients across modern bodyweight classes. Earlier Wilks values systematically favoured very light and very heavy lifters; the 2020 update flattens that bias using more recent meet data.

Should I report Wilks, DOTS, or IPF GL?

Most federations report IPF GL Points for sanctioned meets. DOTS is widely used in non-IPF federations and online communities. Wilks 2020 remains a useful comparison number with deep historical context. Many lifters report all three.

Do I need to enter my total in kg?

No — enter whatever unit you train in. The calculator converts to kg internally because all three formulas are defined on kilograms.

Is there a different formula for bench-only meets?

IPF GL has dedicated bench-only coefficients. Switch the "Event" field to "Bench only" to use them. Wilks and DOTS do not publish bench-specific coefficients; using the full-power score on a bench-only total is technically an off-label use.
